Ask what pricing they could give you if you were able to purchase at volumes 10x what you think you can actually realistically need, and see if there’s a substantial discount in pricing.

The goal here, is less about trying to get a volume discount down the road (although that’s great) it’s more about discovering how much margin there is in a particular product.

For example, if they tell you that ordering at 10x the volume can get you a 40% discount, then you know that the cost of goods sold or underlying service cost is at most 59% of the retail price.

Now that you’re armed with the information that the vendor is still profitable on that individual item at a 40% discount, you can try to negotiate some of that discount for your individual purchase.

Price Compare Openly: The most obvious technique is also one of the most effective. Before selecting a vendor, find out who two of their competitors are. If you think you want to use vendor A, get a price from vendor B and C first.

Be open and tell B and C that you’re going to get three bids first and that you’re telling all three companies the same thing, that way they’ll know they need to get aggressive from the get-go. Then take the cheapest of those two quotes, and get your quote from vendor A.

If A doesn’t beat the cheapest quote, show them that quote and tell them you need them to beat it by 5%. If he doesn’t you’ve learned where the floor is in pricing, whereas if he does, you know there’s yet more margin hidden there.

No Competition? Then Compare Resellers:

How do you get comparison price quotes if you already know which vendor you want to use, or worse, if they’re the only significant vendor that provides that service or product? The answer is to look for resellers and approach them independently for quotes. Often resellers, particularly of high margin products, are given considerable latitude to package and price the product or service, and often choose to do so in dramatically different ways.

For example, the largest credit card processing company is First Data and they have some proprietary hardware that make them largely without competition when it comes to providing credit card processing for small businesses that want to offer gift cards. Thus, if that was the situation you found yourself in, you’d seemingly have to accept First Data’s pricing without being able to negotiate.

However, if you first look for resellers of First Data you’ll find that Wells Fargo Bank and Bank of America are simply reselling First Data’s processing services, but via their own salespeople. Thus, you can get three different bids for the same exact service and product, and use those companies to bid against one another and give you cheaper pricing.

Aggressively shopping for better vendor pricing is one of the least sexy things that a small business owner can do. Saving 5% on a large vendor doesn’t have the same punch as making a big sale. That’s unfortunate, however, because while the sale will come and go, saving money on a large vendor will pay dividends for the life of your business.

What I do when I fail

I fail at things much more than you might imagine, given that I've written motivational articles and articles related to success.

I fail at all of that stuff, and it feels just as horrible for me as it does for anyone else.

I get down on myself, feel guilty, try to avoid thinking about it, would rather hide it from everyone else.

Failing at things can really suck.

And yet, I get back up and try again.

I fail at eating healthy on a regular basis, but I keep trying again. I'm not that good these days at sticking to an exercise plan, I've failed and I'm trying again, regularly.

I've made several attempts at starting a company, and scrapped it all each time because it didn't feel right. And yet, I started again, and I'm almost done now.

I fail at loving myself. But I don't give up on that.

I fail at being a good friend, a good brother, seemingly multiple times a day. But I continue to try, and sometimes I succeed.

When I try over and over again, once in a while I succeed.

So what's the secret? Well, there isn't any. You just have to keep trying.

That said, here's what I've found to work:

1. I learned a more flexible mindset.

When you are rigidly trying to stick to a plan or achieve a goal, and things don't go according to plan, then you feel like crap and things can get derailed. But if you have a more flexible mindset, and think "I might not go according to plan but that's OK because things might change," then it's not a disaster when you get off track. There's no single track that you have to stay on.

2. I came to realize that every attempt is about learning.

When you fail, that's actually really good information. Before you failed, you thought that something would work, but then real world information came in that told you it didn't work. That means you now know something you didn't know before. That's excellent. Now you can adjust your plan, figure something new out, try a new method. Keep learning.

3. I ask for help

When I'm struggling with something, I know that I can either give up, or I can figure out a better way, so I reach out to my friends, trusted family members, and I ask them. They might give me simple, obvious, why-didn't-I-see-that advice that I need, or brilliant tips, or accountability. Whatever happens, my friends and loved ones never seem to fail me.

4. I give myself a break.

If I'm struggling, sometimes my mind or body just needs a break from the discipline. So I'll take a day or two off, or a week, or even more. There's no set time that's right for every situation, so I've been learning to go by feel. For some things, I've taken a month or two off from trying to learn something.

5. I remind myself why it's important.

It's easy to give up on something, because not doing it is always easier. But giving up means you're loosing something important, like helping someone, and so if my reasons for doing something aren't just selfish, then I will renew my vigor for the struggle. This alone is often enough to get me going again, especially if I'm doing it to help someone important, like my friends.

I realize that I'm far from perfect, and that the guilty secrets I hide inside myself are no different that anyone else's. You guys are just like me, in the inside, and while we all share the commonality of failing to live up to our better nature, we also share the bond of being able to start again.

So start again.

Think about your life goals

There's never a good time to sit down and think about what you want to accomplish in life. We have busy lives, and even when we're not busy, we might just feel more like vegging in front of the TV or checking our feeds than thinking about the rest of our lives.

Do it today, if you haven't yet. It could take as little as 10 or 20 minutes, and it could make all the difference in the world.

And it's not that hard. You probably already have a good idea of what you want to do, but you may not have written down. Or maybe you've done this exercise before, but you haven't updated your goals for awhile. Now's the time to do it.

1. How to start? First, think about what you'd like people to say about you at your funeral.
This comes from Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly effective people- the habit called "Begin with the end in mind." It's also very effective. Imagine you are at the end of your life, looking back. What would you like to have accomplished? What kind of person would you like to have been?
Now here's the key: start living your life so that you will eventually get to that point.

2. Now that you've given that a little thought, jot down some ideas for life goals you'd like to achieve before you die.
They can be in many areas, but here are few to start with: professional, education, family, spiritual, travel, recreation, hobbies, community, charity. You can probably think of more, and you don't need to have goals in all these areas. Just some topics to get you started.

3. Refine your list, or expand it.
After your initial brainstorm, you may want to trim it down. But you may also want to expand: sometimes it's fun, and worthwhile, to dream big.

4. Now break it down.
What should you accomplish in the next 10 years for each of these goals? How about 5 years? How about two years? One year? And this month?
Once you've planned out each goal for 10 years, 5 year, 2 year, 1 year and 1 month periods, you've got yourself a solid plan.

5. Take action!
I like to take my monthly goals, and make a to-do list for this week. What can I do today to further my goals? And if I can get just one thing done, I've done a lot to make those dreams a reality!

The Empty Container

Our lives get so complicated not overnight but gradually.

The complications creep up on us, one insignificant step at a time.

Today I ordered something online, tomorrow someone gifts me a gift, then I decide I need some new tools. One item at a time, the clutter accumulates, because I'm not constantly purging the old.

Today  I say yes to an email request, tomorrow I say yes to a party invitation, then I get asked to a quick cup of coffee, then I decide to be a part of a project. One yes at a time, and soon my life is full and I don't know how I got so busy.

I look at news site, then a social media site, then my email, then read an interesting article, then watch an online video someone sent me... and soon my day is gone, and I didn't get much done, and my life gets eaten away in minuscule bites.

How do we protect against this feature creep, this complication creep? We have to take a step back, regularly.

Instead of thinking, "how can I get rid of this complicated mess?".... Lets ask, "What if I started with a blank slate?"

What would you do if your life was a blank slate?

If it were an empty container, with limited space, what would you put in it?

For me, I might put in some play time, reading time and exercise time; some long walks and talks with good friends and close relatives; work that matters to me and helps others; continual learning; and time alone to meditate and spend with my thoughts and good book.

Those are the things that I'd put into my empty container, because they feel right to me. What would you choose?

Once we've figured that out, we know what belongs in the container... now we just need to constantly look at things and activities and requests and tasks, and ask "Is this one of my container items?"

How Indians view people from North East part of India?

*Statutory warning: if it does not make any sense to you then you have two options: 1. Refrain from reading it. 2. Read and consider me as a total gasbag.

Yesterday an incident happened, that shook me. For the first time I felt ashamed for being an Indian. The girl who belonged to the North-Eastern part was being eve-teased in public.
People call them with different names: 'Chinky', 'Chini', 'Nepali' etc. They ask them stupid questions: 'How do you see things?', 'Are you Chinese?' etc
Is this how the youngest country in the world treat its fellow citizens?
There are a lot of North-East Indians who travel to the mainstream India for job opportunity, higher education or in a hope to live a better life. What do we do? We kill, rape, harass, kidnap or mentally torture them. Aren't they Indians? Doesn't this country belong to them as it belongs to us?

Well people from North Eastern part are also taught the same states and their capital as it was taught to us. While I've not personally met many Indians from the northeast, I think the situation can be summed up pretty well by a dialogue from the 2007 film "Chak De India!":

Two female athletes arrive in Delhi from Manipur and Mizoram to play for the Indian national hockey team. The coordinator says something like:
"Welcome! We are glad our guests from the farthest corners of India could join us".

The girls stare in silence and the man asks "What's wrong? Aren't you happy?"

And the girls reply, "How can we be happy if we are regarded as guests within our own country?"

Reason why North-East Indians are better and different from the mainstream Indian:
1. They have great fashion sense. They like to wear some fabulous dresses not to reveal their body, not to excite you. If you are outraged by the dresses they wear, either you are culturally less educated or you are mentally sick.
2. When it comes to music they have awesome taste. They like Jason Mriaz, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and obviously don't like Himesh Reshamiya or Yo Yo.
3. They are fun filled persons. You can never get bored with them.
4. If it comes to their smile, I bet nothing can beat them.
5. If you are food lover you will definitely enjoy their company.
6. Yeah, they have beautiful eyes, beautiful hairs, all natural.
7. They are kind, polite and full of humanity. If she smiles at you it doesn't mean that she is gonna sleep with you. Grow up. She smiles because they believe in dignity for all.
8. Parents, they love their children in the very same way as in other parts of India. Father is always passionate about his wards dream. Mother, Even infinite numbers of words will not be enough for me to explain a northeastern mother.
9. THEY ARE INDIANS. How can anyone call them Nepali, Chini or Chinky? They also serve this motherland.
10. When it comes to natural beauty Sikkim can't be beaten.

I found subtle racism in people from mainstream India on this issue.
Most of us are ignorant about the sensitivity of the issue and consider calling N-E Indians as "Chinky".
Do I blame the entire nation?
NO.

I blame our Education Curriculum that hasn't mentioned even a single word about the history, culture of about 40 million INDIANS.
Secondly I blame so called "NATIONAL MEDIA" according to whom 'National' means Delhi, Mumbai and other metros. North-East stories rarely comes in the media.
Third, There is lack of Public Apathy. India is not limited to Delhi, UP, Mumbai or Punjab.

I was personally told by a girl from Mizoram that she doesn't feel safe living in my city! She's being followed by people, commented for her short dresses, she was sexually harassed. Why are we being so In-Human? Why can't we give them a world they deserve? STOP JUDGING PEOPLE!

Lie to me

Lie is a very powerful thing and one of the most powerful lie is that 'Education can make you successful.' Today education has become a tool of control and what our whole formal education system does is, it plants fear in people like you and me. Education has become a tool where hardly successful people tell  younger generation, what's good, what's bad, what to do, what not to do. 

When I was growing up I was told there are no jobs for magician, there are no jobs for adventurers, there are no jobs for artists, and these are things that people who are educated somehow did not do. And through years of structural institutionalization what has happened is that our natural adventures came down. When nature built us it gave us the recipe for success, imagination, curiosity it built up with so many qualities that were inbuilt or given to make us successful. What has happened through this formal education is that we have found the way to kill these qualities we were born with. 

If education was so important, most of the corporate leaders or most of the successful people in the world should be the most educated, but unfortunately this isn't true. What education does to most of us is that, it tells us to work ourselves into a thin side, so you start of to become an adventurer as a kid, then you go to school, then to college and finally what happens is that you are good at just one thing, while when you were born you were good at so many things. So many of us have put our dreams to the back birth because somewhere down the line we have learnt that becoming safe is much more important than chasing your dreams. Having a safe job, having a safe house, having a safe family is the most important thing. And following your passion is something which is undesirable.

Once a famous person quoted ‘You only live twice. Once when you're born and when you're about to die.’ When you come out of your mummy’s tummy screaming and you don't know how it is to live and you start to breathe and when you’re about to die it’ll be the last time you’ll feel alive. It’s like a flaming matchstick which glows bright before extinguishing. You feel enormous sense of energy.

Between living and dying, we hardly live. We spend our life in painful jobs, infinite friends and a very safe life which is hardly rewarding. I sometimes wish I could un-educate myself. I find myself after dying through college and other exams that my curiosity, imagination and my natural talents were all dumped. I don't think you should make the same mistake. Don’t believe in lies that other people tell you. Just Believe in yourself. Education is supposed to make you adventurous, an adventurer who discovers new things not simply does what other people want him to. Feel Yourself.

Planet Earth is You..

Humans... what an incredible word. We are considered the most intelligent specie on the Planet, however, we are the worst. What do we do in this world.? Who brought us here?.. What's our mission in this world?
Maybe we will never understand it, but it seems that our only mission is to continue with its destruction.
Have you ever considered that this planet does not belong to us? Either way, its care is in our hands. They (Plants and Animals) were here before us, we are nothing but their guests. We came and invade their territory and we are destroying their home. They have been tolerant, we've been forgiven countless times, but we keep ignoring their situation.
We've been their kidnappers, their killers, however, they accept us as their owners. We are the only specie that attacks, destroys, annihilates, contaminates and extinguish just for ambition, just to live better.
The world is yours, it's ours, it's for all of us, remember it's their world too and we have to understand that they give to anything to save their lives, much less to save their Planet. Planet Earth is dying, we are destroying it in a savagely way, but it's hungry for love, it's getting weak and despite it all, it keeps giving us generously the best experiences since we arrived on it.
The Planet has been the best host for the specie, does it need no recognition? If we were giving the capacity to speak, think, create, build and help, why do we remain silent, ignoring, destroying and killing?
Open your eyes, you are dying too, along with your planet, the only Planet in our Solar System that we were given the privilege to live. We are billions on this Planet, we are thinking race, rational, dominant, why we haven't noticed it yet?
We are capable of conquering countries, the moon, even planets, however, we are not capable of conquering our own heats. Touch your heart, feel what it is trying to say, listen to what is yearning for, and let's understand that we have to coexist on the same Planet.
Start by changing yourself, engage yourself, make sure your children know it, and remind those who have forgotten. When the day Humanity stops existing and another specie finds this planet, they will see that our specie failed, fell down but got up and fixed our mistakes.
The Planet is not the same anymore and we cannot wait any longer. Everybody knows what we have to do, our time is now. The future of the Planet is still in your hands, help it, let's help it... because PLANET EARTH is YOU.

How do you know you are on a right path in your life?

You know you are on the right path if:

• You don't need someone else to make you happy. You find your own company most comforting and complete.
• You have identified your passion and are constantly working towards achieving it.
• You have made your books your best friends.
• You are not at all worried or concerned about what society and the people in it think of you. You are not afraid of pursuing your dreams.
• You find yourself happy and content during most of the times.
• Your IDOLS  have turned into your RIVALS.

Three question every would be Entrepreneur should ask themselves

Three questions which every young business mind should ask themselves before committing themselves. But do you think there are any other factors that should be taken into consideration? Have a read and let us know.

1. Is higher education for me?
As I have written before, while education is very useful, it cannot replace the day-to-day experience gained as an entrepreneur.
As you consider whether or not to return to studies, think about what can be gained by doing so, and what can be lost. Simply make lists of the positives and negatives, then tally up which one looks like the better option. If you are going back to further develop your knowledge base and spend more time building on your plan for the future, great. However, if you are thinking about returning to school in order to put off making some tough choices, them think again. Now is the time to act, and the months that you waste deciding what to do could be better spent getting your business off the ground.

2. Would I like to have a boss?
I could never imagine having a boss. I have always wanted to forge my own path. Many people only realize it much later in life, so an early zeal for entrepreneurialism and independence should stand you in good stead. Nevertheless, you will only make the grade if you hone in on one particular passion. Spreading yourself too thin at the outset of your career as an entrepreneur and trying to break into several markets at once is a recipe for disaster.

3. What those around me think?
If you still can't decide, ask your loved ones for their opinions. They'll give you honest appraisals and can help to set your mind at ease. They could also be the people to help you with initial market research and every other aspect of setting up a business. And keep in mind that business is a lot more fun when you work with people you love.

For further inspiration try to locate a mentor who has been there and done it and can pass on their know-how.

15 Reasons why you should STOP bursting crackers this DIWALI

I want to start this post by thanking all those who don’t burst crackers but if you still do that, I humbly request you to stop bursting crackers this Diwali. That doesn't mean that you can burst them next year. Bursting crackers might give you some pleasure but just look at what happens to the environment and other people near us because of these crackers. If you don’t burst crackers, please share this with the ones who do and if you do, please take a careful look at this article and then decide if you still want to go ahead with it.

1. They cause air pollution

This is one of the most visible effect of bursting crackers. According to this article, air pollution goes up by 30% during Diwali.

2. It takes time for the harmful gases to go away

           There’s nothing better than inhaling some Nitrous Oxide on an auspicious day

              If there is no rain and proper wind, the harmful gases take longer time to get cleared

3. Did I forget to tell you about the ailments and diseases that are caused by these gases?

Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrous Oxides and many other harmful gases are released because of crackers causing respiratory problems and diseases. You definitely don’t want to inhale them.

4. You are helping to increase global warming

        Now this is a bit over exaggerated but I hope you got my point.

      CO2, Nitrous Oxide and other greenhouse gases “Like this”.

5. Noise Pollution

Crackers create high decibel sound and most people feel numbness in the ears after bursting crackers. It can also make you deaf.

6. Garbage

Well, garbage disposal is a perennial problem in India but crackers just add to the existing problem.

7. Babies,  pregnant women, old people get affected

Just look how much this young kid is enjoying the loud noise.

       Now why would any good person want to trouble them?

8. Animals get scared

Why do you want to be evil? Animals are so nice and cute. Please don’t scare them.

9. Underage kids make crackers

Seven year old Nurba isn’t playing, she’s working because you want to buy crackers. Source

That’s true, you are promoting child labour.

10. People get injured

                                           Do I need to show you anything else so that you will believe me? 

                                           Make peace, not firecrackers

11. They cause fires

                                             isn't it obvious that firecrackers causes fires?

12. This isn’t how we celebrate Diwali traditionally

This is how you should celebrate Diwali. With lights, not some miniature bombs

Deep(light) avali (rows) means a row of lights, not row of high noise making crackers. Celebrate it by lighting lamps and distributing sweets and presents.

13. You are wasting your hard earned money or your parents money

 There’s nothing better that spending Rs 100 on a product that bursts and makes a deafening sound.

 Trust me, these crackers are just a waste of money.

14. Bursting fancy crackers has become a status symbol

           Please put an end to this idiocy

15. In case you are very religious, I want to tell you that people are blowing the gods and goddesses

Congratulations! You just blew up the gods whom you worshiped some time back. If paintings of gods by some artists has offended you in the post, this should offend you even more than the paintings.
